  • Community Members,
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Happy New Year!

2025 is a monumental year for the National Center for Victims of Crime as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. Since our founding in 1985, we’ve been dedicated to advocating for victims, providing essential resources, and driving systemic change to create safer communities.

This milestone is an opportunity to reflect on four decades of progress, honor the resilience of victims and survivors, and recognize the tireless efforts of those who support our mission. Throughout the year, we’ll share powerful stories, host engaging events, and highlight the ongoing work that shapes our advocacy.

We’re thrilled to embark on this journey with you. Thank you for being an essential part of our mission. Together, we can make 2025 a year of empowerment, connection, and hope.

Have news you want to share in our January 29, 2025 issue? Here’s what to do: Submit a paragraph of 150 words or less with the information you want to share to no later than noon Eastern on Monday, January 27, so we can try to fit it in! We generally are unable to accommodate images, so please make sure all relevant links are in your text submission.

  • Support for victims in New Orleans
    ------------------------------------------------------------

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the victims of the January 1st mass violence in New Orleans. This tragedy took the lives of 14 individuals and left many others wounded. The ripple effects of such violence are felt deeply by the victims' families, friends, and the entire community. Survivors of this incident will carry the trauma for a lifetime.

We urge the public and media to respect the privacy of those affected, allowing them the space and time needed to grieve and heal.

For those impacted by this tragedy, NCVC’s VictimConnect Resource Center offers confidential support. Reach out at 1-855-4-VICTIM or victimconnect.org.

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Each year, we take this time to highlight the devastating impact of human trafficking and the importance of collective action to end this crime. The White House has issued a proclamation reaffirming the nation’s commitment to fighting human trafficking and supporting survivors.

This month, we’re sharing valuable resources and events to further education and advocacy:

  • True crime advocacy-- Ethics in storytelling
    ------------------------------------------------------------

True crime continues to captivate audiences, but when told responsibly, these stories can drive positive change. At NCVC, we emphasize the importance of ethical storytelling that respects victims’ dignity and prioritizes a victim-centered approach.

Our CEO, Renée Williams, was recently featured in US Weekly (https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/why-true-crime-is-getting-the-hollywood-treatment/) , discussing the role of ethics in true crime storytelling and the potential for these narratives to support victims and inspire change.

Check out the article (https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/why-true-crime-is-getting-the-hollywood-treatment/) to learn more about how NCVC is shaping the conversation around ethical true crime storytelling.

  • Recognizing a leader in victim advocacy
